Crocodile kills mother and baby in Mangochi

Two people, a mother and her two year-old baby were Tuesday morning found dead in the southern district of Mangochi after attacked by a crocodile at a river near Bakili Muluzi Bridge.

Mangochi police spokesperson Rodrick Maida says the attack happened around 6pm on Monday when the women Hawa Twezi (25) carrying her baby boy on her back went to fetch water from the river.

“The crocodile attacked her as she was about to return home and pulled her into the river. This was happening in the presence of another woman who was washing at the river. She rushed to the village at M’baluku, where she mobilized the communities who searched for the crocodile all night long but to no avail,” he said.crockdile

Maida said the dead bodies were found on the river bank later in the morning.

According to Maida the woman had her jaw broken and her intestines out. But the child body was untouched and believed to have died due to suffocation.

State radio, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation also reported Tuesday evening that the area around the river has long been known as a death trap for the surrounding community who depend on it as it is highly infested with crocodiles.
