Don’t mislead JB, UDF parliamentary leader tells ‘hand-clappers’

Leader of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the house Clement Chiwaya has urged parliamentarians close to the seat of power not to mislead President Joyce Banda.

Chiwaya, who once served as cabinet minister in late president Bingu wa Mutharika before he resigned on matters of principal, said Banda’s predecessor was  also misled by greedy legislators and hand clappers.

“Mr. Speaker Sir, we are the same MPs who supported Dr. Bakili Muluzi’s third term bid, we also clapped hands when president Bingu wa Mutharika was taking us [Malawians] astray,” said Chiwaya in Parliament.

Chiwaya: Don't mislead President Banda
“ Now we have just changed positions. Let us represent Malawians and not our personal egos,” pleaded Chiwaya.

The People’s Party which is now the de facto government party has been beefed with defectors from other political parties, largely recycled politicians who have bootlickers of late Kamuzu Banda, Bakili Muluzi and Mutharika administrations.

Banda, who was vice president,  assumed the presidency in April, after the death of president Mutharika on April 5 . She will serve out his term which ends in 2014.

She can seek election for office in 2014 and again in 2019.
