Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) Executive Director, Timothy Mtambo, staged the purpoted attacks on his office, the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has said.
Central Region police spokesperson Norriet Chihana confirmed that they have received a report that thugs on Thursday evening twice terrorised the office CHRR in Lilongwe, severely beat up a security guard before attempting, in vain, to petrol-bomb the premises.
But DPP secretary general Gresedler Jeffrey claimed Mtambo “planned and executed” the attacks on CHRR offices in order to gain political mileage.
CHRR is an outspoken critic of the DPP administration and President Peter Mutharika and the development comes amid growing tension ahead of 2019 elections.
Human rights activists and Mtambo himself, suspected the attack was the work of regime thugs.
But DPP spokesperson Nicholas Dausi said he allegations were baseless.
“They are just using DPP to get more money from their donors. We categorically reject those assertions,” said Dausi.
Meanwhile, Central Region police spokesperson Chihana, said the cops at Lingadzi police station are carrying out investigations “ to establish concrete details of the issue.”
