DPP leadership shake-up: New VP, SG and spokesman appointed

Malawi ruling Democratic Progress Party (DPP) has made “courageous changes” in its hierarchy, replacing some of its top brass following their respective appointments in government positions.

The major shake-up has seen the removal of Jean Kalilani from the position of the party’s Secretary General.

Kaliani, who is also Health Minister, has since been appointed as the party’s special advisor.

The new DPP secretary general is Ecrain Julius Kudontoni.

The party has also appointed veteran economist and diplomat Ted Kalebe as Vice President for the Centre replacing Dr Hetherwick Ntaba who is heading to Britain as Malawi’s new High Commissioner to London.

Another DPP position of vice president has gone to Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr George Chaponda (south).

Leader of Government in parliament, Francis Kasaila is now the party spokesman replacing verbose Nicholas Dausi, who is heading state spy agency.

DPP has also appointed Richard Makonde as the new National Organizing Secretary taking over from Chimwemwe Chipungu who is now Safe Motherhood National Coordinator.

State Vice President Saulos Chilima is now a member of DPP National Governing Council as special advisor like Kalilani.

Meanwhile, DPP leader and Head of State Peter Mutharika have wished the newly appointed members all the best as they undertake their new roles.

H e said the restructuring process would be done in order to strengthen the party in preparations to 2019 elections.

  1. A Sibweni I forgot. Is Nick Masebo from the North? The surname doesn’t seem northern or is he one of those who change names in order to evade quota system if possible or not to be identified as from the North?

Yes this is my beloved Malawi, mpaka kufika pamenepo?

  2. A chewa muzichenjera always being put second hand Ndi nyambo yogwirira somba a Nick Masebo agowapusitsa ndi u vp north in a true sense Chaponda is second from APM ku DPP kwawoko ku chipani.

  3. I dont understand the reason. If you say these people have been replaced because they have governmental positions, what about you APM? Dont cheat ppo but speak the truth man.

  4. Its is a good move as long as they keep Masangwi and Mulli away from the core politics. These are very notorious and dangerous people to any grouping including the DPP. AVOID INVOLVING BISHOP SIMAMA ALSO. HE IS ANOTHER CROOK.

  5. Ocakwera wonani amzanu ayambapo kukomzekera 2019 pomwe inu muli phwii uku mukuzikanda ndimabala olephera cisankho. Tayambani mwacosa mai kabwila ameneyu azatiluzisansotu mcaka ca 2019 ngati simumusintha.

  6. I sincerely hope these chnages have been thought out carefully and I have a lot of trust in APM. One thing that becomes a big problem when you take a top position, all sorts of people use all sorts of ways todisengage you! I pray that this not the opposition finding its way into the governement through lies and inuendeo making our president make irational decisions! I hope not!

The truth always comes out though it is just a matter of time!

  7. This is a positive move (starting point). There need to separate political and government functions where possible.

  8. Someone educate me on DPP shake up and structure. APM is the president of DPP, then who is the Vice President? I expected Saulosi to be the natural DPP vp to APM in the same mode as he is vp in govt.

Below that are the DPP regional
Vps? Like chaponda and Kalebe. I don’t know the north dpp vp. Or is it APM, then straight to regional vps as second in command of dpp?

How can Saulosi be just a member of dpp governing council? Does APM really need two special advisors when he already has a few advisors. What is special that the two are going to advise APM?

  9. Chilima is the Vice President of the country and in charge of civil service reforms amongst other important government issues. He is doing real work, he doesn’t have the time to be running day to day party issues apart from being in the NGC. Peter works very closely with Chilima and trusts him a lot. So lets not assume that the VP not being give some operational role in the party is some kind of slight, surely if you have any brains you wouldn’t expect the VP to be appointed as organising secretary or party spokesman for Gods sake!

  10. The southern region party. A few stupid northerners still vote for this tribalistic organization which has brought misery to the nrth with it’s so called quota system.

  11. When asked by journalists, Dr Jean Kalirani feigned ignorance on the changes. What ever that means, I dont know.

  12. SMALL PERIOD LIKE NOT OVER SEVEN MONTHS, THE VICE PRESIDENT AND THAT ENORMOUS VOTES FOR HIM FROM NTCHEU, MBWENU BASI ZATHA.
KWENI NDALE AMWENE, KAYA TILI POMPANO MASO AKUWONA.

  13. Saulos is the next Malawi President. This shake up is nothing. The guy is presidential material. He is a threat because the guy knows what he is doing. He is doing a good job. He has a genuine vision for Malawi. If God is on his side who can oppose Him.God will make away for him where there seems to be no way. He works in ways we cannot see. He wull make a way for Mr Chilima.

  14. This is madness,y now?so meaning one man or NGC has power to appoint SG ?dont u see pp,y do those pipo never appoint their SG after that big man But keep on using acting?may be u had private convetion.shame DPP.

  15. Saulos Chilima is not going to be the running mate in 2019. APM does not trust this guy. Now wonder he has not offered him any proper position in the ranks and files of the party. Saulos, shine your eyes. You are among the vipers!!!

  16. Mr Kalebe, you are fust westing your precious time on that position given o you by Peter, if you knew how read what is written in the wall, you would read it wider. There is no president from South that will give anyone from Centre region power or mandate to rule Malawi. Malewezi Kachimpha, we VIPs, just ceremonial, all they want from is to operate as their face on this region, Mtaba was just a figure head, you too will be, anuwake ndipo a China Chapondawo, mukungotaya nthawi, Jean K, Mtaba, ndipo Chilima are just being and later o be dumped like condoms, dmp after use,
Kaya mwina chifukwa chofunako ntchito ngati mom we achitila a mtabawo, pitiilizani, chinalibwino mukanathandiza azanu muali ku MCP inu simungafune zoona kudzandiza azanu?

  17. I thought SC would have been given a genuinely influential position in the party now that they are running government. But alas! No proper transition of power from the old generation to the young generation. What a lost opportunity for this old greedy generation!

  18. something is not right here! What is a special advisor? Jean Kalilani was voted by the convetion as SG can the president just change this? I genuinely dont know so I may be wrong.

A word of advice to The prof! People who do not want you in that position will do everything to mislead you. Please don’t let this makeyou make ill thought out decisions! These people are not interested in making you butrather they would prefer breaking you. Believe me they wil not stop and I am sure you know who I am talking about.

Finally when someone has given yuo their unconditional support, be usre to protect their loyalty even when things appear to be going very well for you because you got there because of their support! DO NOT FORGET APM or you will pay heavily. I am not in your government and there must be reasons why you have made this chnages this way but I smell a rat! be very careful dont make people unecessarily angry!

  19. This is madness at its best, Oooooooh Ndaona ine APM akufuna kulimbikitsa position ya the Hating, and tribalist Chaponda. hell is waiting for DPP.

  20. Useless…The State Vice President is a non-entity in the party hahahahahahaha just a mere advisor with no real mandate!!! cry my beloved central region..the problem with us is lack of coordination…….we are shedding tears, soon will be shedding blood!!!!

  21. Real politicians and not statesmen. Thinking about the next “GENERAL ELECTION” and not next “GENERATION” I wish Malawi had STATESMEN.

  22. Tsamba Likagwa would like to congratulate all the new office bearers in their new portifolios. I have always admired Ted Kalebe coolness. You deserve this high post Mr Kalebe.

  23. Appointed by young Kahuna as proprietor of DPP estates. Time will tell if DPP does not belong to the Mutharika family.

  24. George Chaponda is being groomed to take over from Peter Muthalika as the party’s torch bearer in 2019 or 2024 depending on natural occurences. There must be something wrong with Jean Kalilani & Saulos Chilima. They are gradually being externalised, otherwise Saulos could be made vice president of the party.

  25. This should be a lesson to mcp.You are busy making unnecessary noisy yet your party is not fit to win votes across the country.Early birds catches worm and don’t be suprised when DPP win with landslide in 2014.

    1. The voice of the people and delegates who elected Jean at the convention thrown to the bin…..

SO IS THERE ANY NEED FOR ELECTIONS AT THE CONVENTION IF HIGH POSITIONS elected AT THE CONVENTION CAN BE CHANGED WILLY-NILLY?

  26. Oh so u only used us Ntcheu people to secure votes for the Party? Thos should have, been an opportunity to strenghthen the position of Chilima in the party.Advisor ndiye kuti chiyani? So ehstevrr he saye in the party its a question of take it or leave it!

  27. MWACHITA BWINO KUSINTHA MAUDINDO ENA NDI ENA, KOMA CHONDE MUSASIYILE POMWEPA, KU DISTRICT SO MUSINTHE, MAKAMAKA KUNO KU SALIMA ZINTHU SIZILI BWINO, A DISTRICT GOVERNOR ATHU SALI BWINO, MCHIFUKWA CHAKE KULIBE DPP MP KU SALIMA. CHONDE SINTHANI MWACHANGU, ANTHU CHIPANI CHA DPP KU SALIMA AMACHIKONDA KOMA VUTO NDI LEADERSHIP IMENE TILI NAYO, MUKAPANDA KUSINTHA IZO NDI ZANU, INE BOLA NDANENA. CHIPANI CHA DPP CHILI PA KAMUZU ROAD POKHA. DPP WOYEEEE!!!!

  28. This is only an attempt to strengthen Chaponda’s position in the party and should now be regarded as APM’s successor
giiving. Advisor posts Kalilani and Chilima is an insult.these two have no future in the party. Kalebe and Kudontoni cant match with Kalilani and Chilkma

  29. so far so good,an early bird catches the warm.but kasaila must be as feet as dautsi,he stand even in cadiac arest time,as well as the kanengo police station night spending period.God answers let you enjoy to wash all the tears you had.all positions is waiting you,you can have as many as you can.

  30. amzanutu ayambapo apa kukozekera 2019 koma kabwira ndi mzako lazaro are roitering around 2014 elections. Akadzawina mudzidzati akuberani. zamkutu!!!!

  31. Elected positions vs. Appointed positions. wc is wc? Hope this is within the DPP statutes or constitution…..

  32. o’Chakwera and MCP should take a page from these maneuvers; they rejuvenate political parties, especially after a general election. Losing parties (i.e. MCP -the sad sack loser) should really have been the first off the block in the re-make. Time to reorganize, as that party must have figured out, by now, the main reasons they lost. So, put different people in influential positions; because the same old officers will just continue doing things the same way. Assured ways of losing, again. That’s good and ok with us, because it just cements DPP victory again in 2019.
Perhaps start with replacing Ms. Kabwila-Kapasula! The lady with crude tactics!

  33. What about a northener like Hon Vuwa Kaunda ? Are you telling us that all northerners have no any chance in DPP ? Give chiefs some positions in your party , those are the ones who will do better in DPP .

  34. Abale preparation panopo chitukuko sitinachione koma zinazi timangomva kuyendetsa dziko eti bolani kamuzu BINGU BAKILI NDI Amayiso
