DPP Secretary General demands unity as Mukhito admits Malawi still battling crippling power cuts

The DPP’s Secretary General has issued a rallying cry for unity within the party and across government, insisting Malawi’s development will stall unless officials start pulling in the same direction.

Mukhito calls for party unity

Peter Mukhitho made the plea while addressing senior party officials at a gathering in Mzuzu, where he admitted that persistent problems like power blackouts – which have plagued households and businesses across the country – simply cannot be solved unless everyone works together.

Power cuts have become a familiar and unwelcome feature of daily life in Malawi in recent years, with the national grid struggling to keep pace with demand.

Frequent outages have repeatedly hit businesses, hospitals and households, and have long been a source of public frustration and a headache for whichever party is in government.

Despite the gloomy backdrop, Mukhitho insisted there was cause for optimism, revealing government had pumped K80 billion into local councils through the Constituency Development Fund – proof, he claimed, that development was very much on track.

The high-powered meeting was attended by a host of senior figures, including the DPP’s deputy leader for the Northern Region, the party’s Northern Region governor, and the Minister of Justice.
