Drama as Malawi Police raid ‘rigging’ house, MEC clerks threatened

Malawi Police in Lilongwe has raided a house in Area 10 which they suspect there were “rigging” activities and arrested one person.

Police say they have confiscated a “phone hacking machine” which they suspect to have been used in transmitting fraudulent results to Zodiak Broadcasting Station.

One person whose identity is being shielded has been arrested. Police say he is an official of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

National Spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo was coy to comment and referred our reporter to Inspector General of Police, Loti Dzozi who said Police will issue a statement “in due course.”

And Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Maxon Mbendera told reporters that in some areas data entry clerks have been threatened by some individuals who did not want them to send the results.

“We have asked them to restart work,” said Mbendera.

The MEC chairperson said the official results will be delayed.

Mbendera said as a norm the commission starts announcing results when they have received at least 30 percent of the results from the total number of centers.

He said MEC could not start announcing results because they are also taking into consideration complaints that they have received.

But official elections broadcasting houses, Zodiak and Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) are announcing results from the tally centre.

Mbendera said MEC lawyers were looking at and analyzing the complaints that been lodged.
