Prayer is communing with God and if done without sincere desire, soul or Spirit, then it is a fruitless prayer. Many have persistently been taught that prayer is about asking God for some personal need we have lost all the time. Thesetypes of prayers only turn one into a praying beggar.
God is Spirit in whom we “live, and move, and have our being.” We are the offspring of this Spirit hence we makea conscious contact with Him by turning our attention away from material things but thinking about the Spirit.
Prayer is more than just asking God for help in this physical world but allowing our soul to commune with Him. This is seeking first his kingdom and all things are added to us in this attitude.
The Bible tells about the many times Jesus Christ separated Himself to pray. “Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” (Mathew 26:36). I took a moment to ask myself that if Jesus Christ took time to pray, how much for us?
Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel and bowed low to the ground and prayed with his face between his knees aligning himself with the Father. This is a good example of an effective prayer.
Jesus taught about prayer saying: “And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites are for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily they have their reward” (Mathew 6:5). This is just telling us that God will not answer this kind of hypocritical prayer but explained further on answered prayer.
Mathews 6:6 reads: “But you, when you pray, enter into your closet, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father which is in secret; and your Father which sees in secret shall reward you openly. The word closet does not mean a physical closet, but draw within your inner man by disconnecting yourself from everything else material to enjoy Him in the Holy of Holies. This means that you are not praying a prayer for show, but making God’s interests your own, which assures that He will also make our interest His own.
Take note that you can fast 40 days, cry day and night wanting God to do something to your situation; but unless you understand how to pray in the secret place your mountain will remain standing refusing to move and be cast into the sea. God seeks a personal relationship with us and that communion is expressed in prayer. You talk and wait upon him by being still to hear Him talk back.
