Electric shock kills Suncrest Creameries employee in Malawi

Machine operator at Suncrest Creameries Company in Malawi’s commercial city of Blantyre, 40 year-old Emiliani Bottomani died suddenly Tuesday evening after being electrocuted by Escom power line at the company’s premises, Police have said.

The deceased, who hailed from Kamenyagwaza village, Traditional authority Kamenyagwaza in central district of Dedza, was on a night shift and reported for work at around 5pm, but he was later found lying at the backyard of the dairy company near the brick fence.

And beside him, there were also a ladder and steel bar which was against the wall, according to the deceased’s elder brother, Christopher Chumphalika.

The police suspect that the deceased attempted to steal the steel bar and wanted to push it over the brick fence.

“The position where Emiliani Bottomani was lying and where the steel ladder and steel pole were; one may conclude by saying that he (Emiliani Bottomani) wanted to take (steal) the steel bar from the company by climbing on the steel ladder which was put against the brick fence wall. In the process of climbing; the steel bar contacted the ESCOM power line which was overhead of him,” read the police statement in part.

He was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital where it was ascertain that he died due to electric shock.
