ESCOM disconnect power to Lilongwe City Council, Presidential Drive
Lilongwe City Council members of staff on Friday knocked early weekend retreat after the power provider ESCOM switched off their offices for unpaid huge bills.
It took the Mayor of the City Willie Chapondera who negotiated with the ESCOM officials to come and connect the electricity.
Chapondera confirmed Nyasa Times that indeed the civic offices were disconnected but did not say much.
Meanwhile, ESCOM has also disconnected the Presidential drive, the road which connect City Centre and the State House.
Apart from these two places, ESCOM has also cut power in various traffic lights and that a good number of them are not functioning.
A spot check on Friday revealed that indeed traffic lights are not working and that traffic officers were the ones directing the vehicles.
Nyasa Times also established that Kamuzu Statue compound between Area 18 and Capital Hill has been in the dark since February.

Fedelism is the only solution if Malawi needs perfect administrations in all regions.
The issue is not about the mayor here. The issue is about Management,s priorities. Lilongwe City council’s management especially the Director of Finance prioritizes personal service providers who dish out kickbacks for every payment made. Electricity, water and salaries are always last on the priorities. Imagine to this day salaries have not been paid. The councll s management is too corrupt.
