Escom worker fatally electrocuted

An employee of the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has died after being electrocuted in the line of duty.

The deceased has been identified as Kondwani Masambira, 34 of Msusa Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kapeni in Blantyre.

Chikwawa Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Dickson Matemba said on Thursday that the incident occurred on September 29, 2020 at Tomali Trading Centre.

Matemba said the incident happened when the deceased and his colleagues were assigned to rectify an electric fault at a certain pole near a customers house.

“In the course of duty, Masambira (now deceased) accidentally touched a live wire as a result he was electrocuted and died on the spot,” she said.

“The deceased’s body was removed from the pole by fellow workers and taken to St. Montfort Mission Hospital for postmortem and it was established that death was due to electrocution,” added Matemba.

According to Matemba, the deceased was working at Nchalo ESCOM Branch.
