EU commits €3.8 million for agriculture research and education in Malawi
The European Union has committed €3.8 million towards support to agricultural research and education in Malawi as part of its investment in the knowledge economy of African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) member states.
Malawi joins around 200 partnerships throughout the ACP world which together promote access to knowledge, reinforce capacities and foster innovations. Aquaculture and fisheries, pesticidal plants and coffee will be targeted in Malawi.
The funding will allow the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) to strengthen its links with other universities in the region leading to improved quality of courses and teaching.
It will furthermore receive support to upgrade its existing PhD curriculum and teaching methods in aquaculture and fisheries and will benefit from capacity creation in state of the art management of indigenous livestock which aims to foster innovation and agribusiness development.
Mzuzu University will receive support for its work on pest control technologies through use of pesticidal plants in partnership with universities in the Eastern and Southern Africa region and the United Kingdom.
The coffee sector will also benefit from this investment through an upgrading of Lunyangwa Agriculture Research Services’ laboratories and provision of training in modern techniques for producing coffee seedlings.
Lluis Navarro, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Malawi welcomed the announcement saying, “Strengthening the capacity of ACP countries to find innovative solutions to increase their resilience to external shocks and engender sustainable and equitable economic growth is a key dimension to tackle poverty. For this reason higher education, science & technology and applied research are at the heart of the 10th European Development Fund intra-ACP strategy, in particular in Malawi”.

You are drunk with APM. It is not him bwana. start applauding him when budgetary support resumes. Maybe you do not understand what budgetary support is… lol
@wobebawanga: its not about APM..staff/researchers write proposals for competitive grants which are then funded when they pass the assessment process and meet the grant criteria..its not just a matter of donations, staff had to sweat writing convincing proposals unlike other cases where donors just gives grants…hope its a bit clearer!
