Ex-minister in alleged sexual assault, victim seeks justice

A 24 year old woman from Lilongwe who was working as a  maid at the residence of the former minister Dr Cornelius Mwalwanda at Ngala in Karonga district is seeking justice from rights defenders after his boss allegedly raped her.

Mwalwanda: I didn’t do it

Mwalwanda’s agent based in Lilongwe recruited the woman on 11 January, 2017 but on 16 January around 8 pm, her boss sent her to prepare his bedroom as his wife and family live in America.

However, Mwalwanda reportedly followed the woman to the room, locked the door and allegedly had unprotected sex with her.

“The woman told us that her boss said all of his female house workers slept with him and that it was not strange,” said a neighbour.

Being a stranger in the area, the woman tried to seek help from the nearby houses but they all chickened out and  referred her to the Police.

“We also referred her  to acting Group Village headman Myereka who further reffered her to Nyungwe Police Unit saying the matter was beyond him,” she disclosed.

However, Officer in Charge for Nyungwe Police Unit a Mr Kayange also referred the matter to Chilumba Police Post on 18 January, claiming the matter was involving a high profile person.

Police sources said the woman was forced to return to Lilongwe and was threatened with arrest  if she continued staying in the district or pushing the matter.

Efforts to talk to the woman proved futile as she is out of the district.

“The police resolved that the victim must be given K200,000 cash and transport before sending her back to Lilongwe ,” said our security source.

When contacted, Chilumba Police Post officer in charge a Mr Chione declined to comment on the matter saying “no one has come up with such case here.”

However, Mwalwanda in telephone interview while failing to deny or admit the allegations levelled against him, threatened to sue Nyasa Times if it goes ahead and publish the story published the story.

“I don’t know anything about that, someone has just cooked that,” said Mwalwanda.

Nyasa Times understand that it is not the first time that the former minister has been embroiled in such issues involving young women.

  1. Firstly, name of Mwalwanda’s agent missing in the story. Secondly name of the ‘victim’ missing in the story despite being above 18 years old. Thirdly both Police Offices mentioned say nothing of that sort ever came on their desks. Well, probably I am biased, but I sense propaganda against somebody here.

  2. This issue is between Hon Frank Tumpale Mwenefumbo the current Member of Parliament and Hon. Mwalwanda. Really no one will understand between the two. When Frank was Deputy Minister in Bingu’s government Dr Mwaluwanda campaigned so hard till Frank lost the Constituency. Bingu died Dr Mwalwanda also was Minister in Bingu and Joyce Banda Frank campaigned vigorously against Mwalwanda and Frank that time were all PP. Now since Mwalwanda is back and supporting MCP Frank is there knowing the same tit for tat politics of losing might hunt him 2019.
Yes as a man in fresh it might be true that the bigman was really in this mess but I personally thinking this should not west our precious time. We have Chaponda pocketing K10 billion suffocating the country’s economy that’s where we need to focus. We have serious shortage of leadership in country that’s where we need to focus. We are currently the poorest in the world that’s where we need to focus. Our education system has really gone down our Universities shut down for reason that’s where we have to focus. We have serious water and electricity problems that’s where we have to focus.
What is wrong with Malawi now just a small issue of Mwalwanda kukhala chinkhani Chachikulu.
Mwalwanda has been hoodwinked here there is nothing to worry. Palibe zoona apo Frank ndi amene wapangisa and looking at some Comments above are written by Frank himself.
My Hon member Tumpale Mwenefumbo just work for your people in the Constituency stop cooking and digging your friend a grave in the end the grave will be for you.
God bless Karonga and Malawi as a country.

  3. Mmmmm u the journalist why leaving us in the air ? invstgate the whole story to the end and Print it for us. Why can’t you find the victim? Please don’t give us halfbackd stories. Komaso ngati zili zoona iiiiii a Police osankwizinga nkulu ameneyu? nkadakhala ine ndithu nkadankwizinga nawo unyolo ulo ntchito indithere! I would have waitd report from the hospital!

  4. Nyere ngati mbuzi. muzichitako manyazi nthawi zina. Ma D seven onsewa ali pikupikuwa bwanji? Ine ndili ready kukuchengeta iweyo tiwone ngati ungalimbe ndi uchitsiru wakowo.

  5. Koma Atumbuka amaganiza bwanji. Munthu wamkulu mpaka housemaid? Amamvamo chani mwa housemaid?

  6. Stupid !!!!! Osangolondoloza za chimangazi bwanji . Mukusiya munthu woderera a malawi mulimbana nzopusa

  7. Where are the Northern NGOs and other rights advocates? Why are they not hustling to help this lady? One suggestion: if she sues, the case should not heard at that Northern Court in Mzuzu.
Quite brave for this website to publish the story: a sign of maturity, if nothing else.

  8. All this is fake. If the rape did actually do it, all the police needs is to ask the woman: shape and size of the raper’s tool! then physically check his penis. If there is a match, basi he fucked her….justice for the woman

  9. If the story is true, then the police is a disgrace and unprofessinal. Mwalwanda shud have been arrested whether he’s a former minister or not. Crime is crime. He shud have have been summoned to go to the police station to answer the allegations. The police are very stupid always failing to arrest big people. Vindele imwe, mbuzi. Mwalwanda is not a high profile person. He’s an ordinary person. NGOs should investigate the issue and assist the woman and ensure Mwalwanda is arrested. The police will sweep the issue under the carpet and Mwalwanda will get away with the crime.

  10. Why didn’t she go to the hospital so that evidence can be recovered? Why didn’t anyone advise her to do so? Anyways, chilungamo chidziwika ndipo ngati sichidziwika pano chizadziwika pamapeto a nthawi.

  11. Just aimed at tarnishing names and images of people. Don’t believe it because the man in question is out of govt and how is he still high profile? Him belonging to MCP now, mukanamva Daudi pakamwa, paja mumati Dausi kaya, always talking as if akunena nthanoyu eeeh.

  12. I’m not proMwalwanda but the story looks disjointed. I suppose Dr. Mwalwanda is not commanding that authority he used to command when he was in power? Now, you want to tell the nation that the police, the neighbours and the whole community refused to assist the victim just because Dr. Mwalwanda is a politician? Really? I bet there should be something amiss in this story or the writer hasn’t done proper home work.
    Thank you

  13. Ba Mwenefumbo ndiwo bachita ivi, mwabana bakwithu ndyale zimutayaningimo waka. Ukaboni uli kochi kuti ba Mwalwanda wakamugunda mwanakazi uyu? Wakapimika na ba chipatala?

  14. WRONG TITLE Nyasa times! This man now 2017 belongs to MCP and holds
a very important position. Oh how clumsy of me! You cannot dent the name
of your party MCP. If this was Trumps country he would have said Ma
RUBBISH fake reporter, painting others black and pretending the parties
    of our likes as saints.

  15. The notion of protecting the politicians must stop. The police is not doing justice. Theye were bribed that’s why the acted like a competent court to say that she must be paid k200, 000. This is a disgrace. The woman is not a prostitute. Mwalwanda must face the law.
