Export Trading employee jailed 8 years over K4.9 million theft

The First Grade Magistrate Court in Ntchisi district has sentenced Steven Kalipinde to 8 years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) at Ntchisi prison for stealing K4.9 million of Export Trading Company Limited.

Kalipinde aged 27 hails from Chipho village, Traditional Authority Msabwe in Thyolo district.

Despite the man denying the charges leveled against him, the court found him guilty because he is believed to have stolen the money during the months of August and September 2012 when he was working with Export trading at Ntchisi trading center.

As the company’s servant, he stole 416 bags of fertilizer, 72 bales of soya beans and 78 bags of maize all valued at K4.9 million being property of Export Trading company.justice

Delivering her sentence, Ntchisi first grade magistrate Dorothy Kalua said that theft by servant is a crime contrary to section 286 of the penal code.

“For this to be like a warning to those who had the same intentions of stealing money for companies like Export trading, the man will be jailed for 8 years so that all employees should take a lesson from him,” Kalua said.

In related development, the same court also sentenced Charles Banda of Chikowo village, Traditional authority Chilooko to serve 6 years IHL and 24 months respectively for house breaking and theft.
