Exposed!Mutharika, Kalirani moved beds too

Information gathered from the Ministry of Health by Nyasa Times has revealed that DPP anointed presidential candidate Peter Mutharika moved close to 100 beds early this year to Chisoka Health Centre in his constituency which led to dire shortage of beds at Kamuzu Central Hospital.

A highly placed sources in the technical equipment department said Mutharika’s order led to the paediatric department and wards 3B and many holding rooms to be deprived of beds which has not been returned to the Central Region biggest referral hospital.

“Dr. Jean Kalirani if she is honest she knows what we are talking about. Personally she ordered the removal of 22 beds from Chitipa Hospital to Mponela and other equipment when she was Health Minister,” said a source who said delivery records at Mponela and Chitipa could show.

Peter Mutharika: Also moved the beds

Mponela Hospital according to journalists who visited the site on Tuesday had 21 beds in its stores and the fury over the transfer could not be understood as they had been transferred within Malawi.

“The fact is that there are 21 extra beds at Mponela which are lying idle and not being used apart from the 13. Is it not sheer strange that she would go screaming and mobilizing people like Kaliati when she knows the practice to be normal in the Ministry? Dr. Kalirani has used a wrong case and cause to fight politics, what will Malawians think of her when they know she over supplied Mponela which in total had 34 excess beds when others have nothing,” said the source.

On Mutharika, the source said when the opening of Chisoka Health Centre  in his Thyolo East constituency was scheduled the Ministry had not procured beds as that was the same period the country was experiencing drug shortages and Kalirani ordered the move of 100 beds to Chisoka.

“Professor Peter Mutharika if he is honest let him deny this. If Dr. Kalirani pretends that this time it is wrong yet she was worse off let her cast the first stone. The challenge is politicization of these issues which affect the decision capacity of Civil Servants,” he added.

And a woman who was paraded by the Women Parliamentary Caucus which has joined the chorus of criticism bypassing the Houses Health Committee for political reasons, yesterday confessed that she was not at the Hospital on Saturday evening as she alleged.
