Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has hired pollster, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to ensure free, fair and credible presidential elections on December 12 in Salima.
FAM chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda assured football lovers that the election, between incumbent Walter Nyamilandu and Sulom backed and banker Wilkins Mijiga will be credible.
“The election will be through a secret ballot and we will need the expertise of MEC. MEC officials will man the polling booths,” said Nyirenda.
In addition, Nyirenda said, FAM has invited international monitors to ensure transparency and accountability in the closely contested presidential elections.
“We will have two people from SAFA to be led by its legal manager. They have confirmed coming. We will also have representatives from Cosafa;” said Nyirenda.
He said in addition, FAM has invited FA presidents from neighbouring countries.
Nyirenda said this shows how committed FAM is to ensure free, fair and credible election.
Nyamilandu has already served three terms and his decision to run for the fourth term has divided the football body just as it has divided football fanatics.
Football has more following in Malawi than any other sport.
