FAM says youth football sponsorship helping talent identification

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has said sponsorship of youth football by individuals and the corporate world is helping in unearthing raw talent which is vital in improving the quality of football in the country.

Sangala: Sponsorship vital

FAM’s Youth Football Development Officer, James Sangala, made the remarks on Monday in an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana) following the launch of a K2 Million football trophy sponsored by business person who has turned into a political aspirant at Chipwaila Ground under Traditional Authority Ngabu.

“There is however need for these sponsors to also facilitate the process of identifying young talented and outstanding players to do trials with bigger clubs so as to broaden their chances of utilizing their talent,” said Sangala.

Ben Khuleya, the business man who wishes to represent the People’s Party (PP) in Chikwawa Nkombezi Constituency launched the trophy which will see teams under Nsenjere, Nkumaniza, Jombo and Makande zones participating warn officials and participants from turning the trophy into a political platform.

“Let me inform each one of you that the launch of the trophy today has got nothing to do with politics. Those taking part should not drag politics into it. There should not be divisions because political affiliations,” said Khuleya.

The launch on Saturday saw Nsenjere Select going home with K50, 000 cash after beating Nkumaniza Select 2-1. Nkumaniza Select went home with K30, 000.
