FAM seals Umbro deal: To be technical sponsors for Malawi

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has sealed a sponsorship deal with British sportswear manufacturer giant Umbro for the Malawi national football teams for an initial three-year contract.

FAM President Walter Nyamilandu said the launch would be held in October 7 during the symbolical signing ceremony of the deal.

“The agreement means Umbro will be the technical sponsors for the national team and it entails that the supply of football equipment will include tailor-made uniforms,” Nyamilandu said.

“In return, we will be required to order replica jerseys for sale for an agreed period of time.”

He disclosed that FAM has already paid K50 million to procure an initial order of 5,000 replica jerseys to be on sale before Malawi face Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations Group B match at home on 11 October.

“Payment amounting to K50 million has already been made to Umbro for the initial replica jerseys consignment and in matches against Algeria, the Flames will also put on tailor-made uniforms,” he said.

“Basically we have maintained the red kit for the home matches and green for away games. Both kits will have touches of the national flag.”

He said the tailor-made uniform was different from the one the Flames had been wearing recently as it was not of the association’s choice.

Nyamilandu described the deal as beneficial compared to the previous deals with Adidas and Puma in the past six years because Umbro are flexible.

“Generally they are flexible in terms of their expectations. They will also be giving us complimentary sportswear and attire for the Flames and further to that the equipment will be extended to other national teams. So we anticipate a win-win situation,” he said.

The price for the replica jerseys is yet to be fixed.

Umbro is a British sportswear firm, which designs, sources and market football-related apparel, footwear and equipment sold in 90 countries worldwide.

Over the years Umbro has sponsored a number of teams including Brazil and until recently England.

Botswana is another country in Africa apart from Malawi to be sponsored by Umbro.

50 million for jerseys and yet FAM keeps keeps complaining that it has no money for preparations for international games?

How does this development relate to the current Flames’ local sponsor?
