Family perish in Dowa fatal accident: ‘Mum was going to TB Joshua in Nigeria’

What started as a journey of hope for Margret Mzumara in search for cervical cancer cure has ended in a fatal accident which has claimed her life and that of her husband.

Margret 49 and her husband, Harvey Mzumara 53 died the spot in the morning hours of Tuesday when the car they were travelling in collided with a truck at Ntengo wa Nthenga in Dowa district, police have confirmed.

Dowa Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Kondwani Kandiado, told Nyasa Times in an interview that the deceased, together with their two children who escaped the accident with injuries, were on their way from Mzuzu to Kamuzu International Airport (KIA).

The surviving children are Taonga 28 (female) and Thembinkosi 19 (male), and were escorting their mother Margret to the airport where she was to catch a 1:3pm flight to Nigeria.

“The family left Mzuzu at around 5am and was driving Toyota Hirux registration number MZ6720 belonging to Mzuzu City Assembly. While at Ntengo wa Nthenga, they wanted to overtake a minibus before involved in a head-on-collision with a truck registration number MP4176 carrying fertilizer,” Kandiado explained.

Kandiado said Taonga sustained a deep cut on the leg while Thembinkosi has soft tissues injury.

“According to the children, their mother was on her way to Prophet TB Joshua’s Church of All Nations Synagogue in Nigeria for divine healing for her cervical cancer ailment,” explained Kandiado.

This becomes the third reported road accident since Monday this week.

A minibus –registration number KU 4641 – with 20 passengers on board crashed when it failed to negotiate a bend around Mchezi area in Kanengo on Monday evening claiming 6 lives.

Police have however put the official death toll at 4.

At around the same time, another accident involving a minibus and a truck happened in the escarpments of Chiweta in Rumphi where 2 people are reported to have died.
