Fatal accident claims one

A middle-aged man was killed a in a car accident on Sunday in the capital city Lilongwe.

The accident happened around 4am at the Area 18 and Area 10 intersection along the M1 road on Monday.

The deceased identified as Kondwani Membele who was driving a Toyota Corolla registration number DA 3648, collided with a truck registration number SA 5172 carrying a trailer registration number SA 5173 driven by a 44- year- old Kingsley Chalika.

Nembele was a student at College of Medicine, according to people who knew him.

According to Lilongwe Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Ramsey Mhlane, the deceased died on spot and the truck driver sustained minor injuries.

“The truck was moving towards the direction of Area 18 roundabout and the Toyota Corolla was coming from Area 10 residential area direction when the vehicles collided at the roads intersection.

“The driver of the Toyota Corolla died on spot. And according to the postmortem results he died due to severe head injuries. However, the truck driver sustained minor injuries and the Toyota Corolla is beyond repair” Mhlane said.

Kingsley Chalika comes from Malize village, Traditional Authority Ndindi in Salima district. The Police said further investigations were still underway to establish the real cause of the accident and determine fate of the truck driver.
