Female candidate joins UDF chairmanship race: Ruth Takomana

Former Escom human resources manager Mrs Ruth Takomana has submitted her nomination forms to join the race for the UDF national chairperson position at a convention scheduled for next Tuesday in Blantyre.

Takumana is the only female candidate for the chairmanship , the winner who will represent the party in 2014  presidential polls.

She will tussle with lawmaker and Economic Planning Minister Atupele Muluzi, former minister Dr George Nga Mtafu and former minister Moses Dossi.

“I can confirme indeed that Mrs Ruth Takomana has presented her nomination papers to run for the UDF chairmanship,” said UDF convention chairperson Lilian Patel.

Patel also said there were “many new faces and talents” who submitted their nominations for leadership positions in the party before close of deadline on Friday.

He refused to comment on the names of the contestants but said they were “interesting names that will restore hope and the moral values that the UDF needs to move forward.”

Apart from the chairmanship, UDF ecretary general (SG) Kennedy Makwangwala  faces the challenge from former Escom acting chief executive officer Kandi Padambo and trade unionist Austin Kalimanjira for the position of SG.

Unandi Banda of the National Election Systems Trust (Nest), will be the returning officer at the conference.
