Female Cop commits suicide in Lilongwe

A female police officer in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe was on Saturday morning found hanging aloft her house’s sitting room at Chitedze.

The officer, identified as Sergeant Irene Chikwakwa, was based at Chitedze Police Station and the cause of her suicide has not yet been established, according to police spokesperson.

Central Region Police Spokesperson John Namalenga said the 35-year-old woman police officer did not leave behind any suicide note and they were puzzled with her death.

“We received a report this morning [Saturday] that she had been found dead after hanging in her sitting room. We rushed there and collected the body which is currently at the Kamuzu Central Hospital mortuary,” said Namalenga.

The police spokesperson said at the moment, they are yet to establish why the police officer decided to take her own life.

He added that according to their records, she had no history of mental disorder or known serious problems that could have led to her action.

The police were investigating the circumstances leading to her death to determine the actual cause.

Survived by two children, late Chikwakwa hailed from Kaphaizi village, Senior Chief Lukwa in Kasungu district.
