Fikisa launch album this weekend

Fikisa, by far the hottest music group in Malawi right now, are set to launch their self-titled album this weekend in Lilongwe, their management company Nyimbo Music Company has said.

The group, famous for their hit singles Walume Wawiwu and Ademwiche (Akamwile) have taken the music industry by storm since they released their chart busting single Ademwiche (Akamwile) whose video is also a Youtube and TVM sensation.

The group’s tour manager Patrick Banda told Nyasa Times that Fikisa is destined to give revellers a time of their lives during the weekend’s events scheduled for Mungo Park on Sunday and Summit Cultural Centre on Monday.

“The group has been practising extensively for these shows and people can brace themselves for a different live performance,” Banda said.

Fikisa: Nyimbo music

“We know that people have been waiting anxiously to watch Fikisa perform but we wanted to do it right. We wanted to come on stage when we were sure that we are going to deliver something mouthwatering,” he added.

Fikisa, which comprises lead singer Jeoffrey Thom and his nephews Saidi and Selemani Yusuf, have impressed with their original ethno-urban music that fuses traditional Yao music with urban elements.

The album, which was recorded by top urban producers in Malawi in the likes of DJ Sonye, Tappa Bandawe and Daredevils, thrills with Thom’s poignant voicing, Saidi and Selememi’s fascinating drumming patterns and some impressive work by the producers.

The album has 14 tracks which Nyimbo Music Company say are sure to impress.

“We know that people have been thoroughly impressed with the four songs that we release for radio so much that they think we cannot have any better songs in the album.

“ But this is both a promise and a challenge to them: buy this album and take a trip down a road that you’ve never travelled before. Listening to the album is a new experience to anyone who dares make that attempt,” he said.

Over the past months, Fikisa have been making sporadic live appearances on Lucius Banda and Black Missionaries’ sets. Last weekend they performed at Zithere Pano in Mangochi on the sidelines of the Malawi Law Society (MLS) annual general meeting and left the lawyers in attendance awestruck with their thrilling stage antics.

After this weekend’s performance, Fikisa take the launch party to Blantyre and Mangochi next week.

Said Banda: “Since we launched the radio singles a few months ago, we have done a lot of talking. Now it time for action.”
