Fire guts Malawi Fertiliser Company in Liwonde

A fierce fire believed to have started from an electric fault has destroyed K3 million worth of property at Malawi Fertiliser Company (MFC) in Liwonde early Monday morning.

The fire started around 2 am and Zomba City Council firefighters managed to contain it a few hours later.

According to Machinga Police publicist Constable Andrew Kingston Mayawo, property such as empty
sacks, building and electrical materials, uniforms, oil, new bagging plant, scale and the laboratory were damaged in the inferno.

He said the fire was noticed by a security guard who informed the company’s assistant manager Mr AGJ Phiri.

Police, Escom and MFC officials made the assessment of the damaged property which has
affected the operations of the fertilizer warehouse company.
