Fire guts nursing school accommodation

A hostel for St Joseph College of Nursing in Chiradzulu has been gutted by fire.

The accommodation used to house about 17 students.

The College principle Miss Kalawa stated that a distress call was made to Fire and Rescue services.

Kalawa told Nyasa Times that the fire started after lightening which struck the building but said investigations are still underway to find out the real cause.

“It is true that a house which was used by some students has been caught by fire,” Kalawa said.

“As of now it will be difficult to explain the cause of the fire because investigations are still going on,” she added.

According to an eye witness (a student), at the scene of the incident, there was heavy rainfall and lightning.

“Lightning struck on the roof of the house and then we saw fire. All belongings have been caught by fire,” said an eye witness who spoke to Nyasa Times.

According to the student, the house which is 2 kilometres outside the school campus was being rented by male students due to insufficient hostels inside the campus.

No casualties were reported.
