First Lady faulted Chimwemwe Banda on ‘crass’ remarks

Details are quickly emerging that after insults hulled at state broadcaster MBC TV presenter Marie Segula by her boss director of programs and news Chimwemwe Banda, the First Lady Calista Mutharika had a short comment on the fiasco.

Top brass businesswomen, political influentials and journalists who were available at the Comesa 1st ladies function at Segecoa Golden Peacock have told Nyasa Times that the Malawi’s First Lady made a comment on Segula’s issue.

“After Segula’s good perfomance in directing the event, the First Lady said to a group of several of us’ azimayi mwanuyu sanakwanitse ntchito yake? Ayi ndithu mwanayu wa panga direct bwino nanga bwanji mabwana ake amawapondeleza atsikanawa…(ladies did she fail to do her job? I think she has done very well…but why do bosses oppress these young talented women…” said one lady.

Another journalist said Marie was crying before the function saying she was hurt to think how her own boss would tell organizers in her face that she was ‘ugly’ and will not be ideal to stand in front of Comesa First Ladies.

“We told her to go ahead and put up good show, she did that and we were happy for her,” said one journalist.

Many Malawians have demanded Banda to make a public apology on her conduct while others said even the most clear-cut apology won’t do because the comments were “stupid and crass”.

Others called on Director General Bright Malopa to ask Banda  “apologise and explain herself”,  saying ignoring issues like this will cripple confidence of many television front people.
