First Mzuzu derby win excites Moyale: Malawi TNM Super League

Moyale Barracks Football Club assistant coach Themba Mtontholo has expressed happiness over his team’s win in first TNM Super league Mzuzu Derby against Rookies Mzuzu United played over the weekend at Mzuzu Stadium.

The assistant coach was speaking after his team came from behind to beat United 2-1 in a fiercely contested match which in the process ended a three-game winless streak for the Lions of Kaning’ina.

Mtontholo said it is always nice to win a game, but winning in derby is even better considering the rivalry that accompanies derbies.

“The coming in of Mzuzu United in the league has made the competition even more stiff since it’s the first time after a long time when two teams from within Mzuzu played in the elite league, and to win in the first derby, we really have to feel proud,” Mtontholo said.

The youthful assistant coach further said the team will bank on the win and start winning games after losing three consecutive games in the league.

“We have to start from here and start producing desired results especially at this early stage of the league when many teams have not started to pick up,” he said.

He further hailed his charges for not losing focus after conceding a goal early in the first half.

“We knew that United will always come hard on us, but after conceding an early goal, we instilled good tactical approaches to the game which eventually paid off,” explained Mtontholo amid chuckles.

The soldiers scored their goals through Chrispin Fukizi in the 55th minute before their talisman Gastin Simkonda grabbed the winner seven minutes later. United got a consolation from Khumbo Ng’ambi in the 20th minute of the first half.

Mzuzu United tactician, Christopher Nyambose praised Moyale for outclassing his charges especially in the second half.

“We played better in the first half but lost control in the better part of second half in which we conceded the two goals in a space of 12 minutes,” Nyambose said.

With Sunday’s win, Moyale have now six points from a possible 15 while debutants United have two points from four points, Blue eagles still top the log with 10 points from four games.—Malawi News Agency
