Five killed in road accident, 7 rushed to hospital

Five people- two women and three men- died on the spot Saturday afternoon when a three tonner lorry they were travelling in overturned in Dedza district, police have confirmed.

The vehicle, registration number BP 4259, with 20 passengers on board also left seven people with serious multiple injuries.

Dedza Police Public Relations Officer Edward Kabango said the vehicle was coming from Lizulu Trading Centre in Ntcheu heading for Golomoti and the accident occurred along the S127 Masasa-Golomoti Road.

“The vehicle was being driven by Mavuto Somba who lost control of the wheel before it overturned once,” said the police publicist.

Kabango said of the seven, two were referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe because of the seriousness of their injuries while five were being treated at Dedza District Hospital.

The identities of the deceased were not yet known at the time of filing the story.

“Right now the driver is under custody at Mtakataka Police Post and he has been charged with an offence of causing death due to reckless driving,” concluded Kabango.

The 26-year-old driver comes from Zalengera village in the area of Traditional Authority Kwataine in Ntcheu district.

Elsewhere

In another accident three people- a pedestrian and two cyclists- were crashed to death by a speeding minibus on Tuesday at Liwonde Township in Machinga.

Machinga Police Spokesperson Misheck Chikwasa said the victims were knocked down by a Toyota Hiace minibus registration number DA 4094 which was over speeding.

The minibus had 15 passengers on board and only the driver survived with minor injuries while all the passengers survived unhurt.
