Flames’ players to be on Malawi govt payroll – Minister

Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Henry Mussa on Tuesday revealed that the Malawi National team football players will be put on government payroll beginning from 2017/18 financial year.

Henry Mussa: Players welfare to be taken seriously

Mussa said this in parliament on Tuesday as part of his response to a question raised by Member of Parliament for Mchinji North East, Alex Chitete on the criteria that was used to employ the current national football team coach, Ronny van Geneugden.

“Government has opted for the payroll initiative to promote professionalism and help to improve the welfare of the players,” Mussa said.

On the selection of the coach, Chitete wondered how government together with the country’s football association arrived at the decision of engaging the Belgian coach who is said to lack coaching experience and has not even won a single match in the three games the Flames have played under his charge.

In his response, Mussa said the coach was selected by a panel of specialists from Football Association of Malawi after being thoroughly assessed adding that FAM was given the mandate to choose a coach that they deem fit for the job.

He, however, noted that the standard of football in the country is declining and that there was need for extra effort to revamp the lost glory of the Flames saying one way of doing so was putting the players on government payroll.

“I can not reveal the amount that players will be receiving. But the issue has been discussed with right people from FAM and government and we hope that the next budget will take care of the issue,” he said.

He also said government has plans to construct a football academy for nurturing talent at tender ages.

“The idea is to instill the skills in them so that they should grow with the sport,” Mussa said.

Are we serious? Where in the world has this ever been done before? It’s not the national team that can promote professionalism among players; it is only the clubs that can do this. Mind you, national team duties are short time engagements that depends on one’s performance at a particular time.

I Strongly disagree that players for national team should be on government payroll for the following reasons:
    1. Players change from time to time due to their performance so what criteria will you be using in paying them
    2. We have some professional players who are playing foot ball in other countries but are also hired to play for our national team are these players will be paid?
    3. What will be their entry qualifications for them to appear on government payroll?
    4. What will be their grade?

If we have some extra money let just employ teachers, doctors/nurses who are just meandering at their homes after graduating from different colleges/university. We have failed in football.

What do you mean Musa? What is the criteria for this? Do you know that that the national teams plays about to games per year and national team players change all the time?

    1. victor says:

the idea is good because the coach will have enough time to be with the players.the team which we have now can not improve even if you bring mouri…. the best is to let them be togather for along time and give the coach time.

  5. jj says:

Since players change according to performance, how will it be determined? How long will be the contracts suppose the performance has dwindled, definitely somebody takes his place and will they phase him out and replace him with a new entrant?

I love my country and want no losses for money

  6. Christopher says:

We are yet to see how this will be done: Like at what time will they be paid? all year round or only when will be on nation duty? all including professional players or only locals? Because I see challenges in who will be chosen as a national team player and at what point? because they also belong to clubs Bola tisadzawonepo nepotism, favourtism and finally cashgatism.

National football players on Govt payroll? Why bloat the already bloated civil service? Continue paying them only when they are on national duty please
