Former Central Bank Governor and DPP presidential hopeful Dalitso Kabambe arrested

Police in Lilongwe have netted Former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Dr. Dalitso Kabambe and DPP’s leadership contender, who was on the run in connection with K4.3 billion he authorised to be transferred to an FDH Bank account.

Police national spokesperson James Kadadzera has confirmed the cops have arrested the former governor and is being held at Lingadzi Police sub-station in Area 18, Lilongwe.

Said Kadadzera: “It is true we are holding in our custody at Lingadzi police station a former governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi in connection with some matters that we are investigating.”

Other former senior RBM officials were arrested yesterday and are still in police custody.

It is reportedly in hiding following revelations that he authorised the transfer of K4.3 billion to FDH Bank account number 1024883104001 the night before the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) announced results of the court-sanctioned Fresh Presidential Election.

The FDH bank account is held in the name of Chief Elections Officer, which corporate governance experts and commentators faulted.

Police have arrested former Deputy Governor Henry Mathanga, who is currently involved in a legal challenge for constructive dismissal.

Arrested as well are retired Director Rodrick Wiyo of Financial Markets and a Senior Dealer/Manager Leah Donga who is also named in the forensic audit of the bank as having a hand in the abuse of Covid-19 funds.

Kabambe, a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential hopeful is said to have given an excuse to for not reporting to the National Police Headquarters in Lilongwe today.

Previously MEC defended its position when this obscure account existence was revealed saying: “The nation should be informed that this amount was duly authorized by the Accountant General.

“These amounts were meant to facilitate payment of printing of ballot papers and other bills for electoral activities, and allowances for security officers, polling staff and other service providers during the polling exercise.”

Nyasa Times understands that more arrests are underway at the Treasury, Malawi Electoral Commission and DPP officials.

Former Minister of Finance Dr Goodall Gondwe is said to be on the list of those to be picked in the next 48 hours.

  1. Hmmmm… Read the Audit Report first and come back to give your partisan or cadet comments. Anzanu amadya kasanu…. dziko lomweli. It’s all in the report.

  2. Thieves must face the music. The government should also look at the present thieves who have been stealing from parastatals in the name of training. The boards of MACRA and NRA. Do these people need training? Was training a justifiable way of stealing?

  3. This is very good to burry the rubble, these DPP gurus destroyed our country by giving each other huge sums of salaries whilst our teachers and medical personnel were being given peanuts. Munya simunati muzingoti pa ground sipali bwino chifukwa munaba kwambiri.

  4. You can now see clearly what this MCP lead government is all about, as one commentator said, witch-hunting! Its clueless and dont even know which direction they are going. They will pay heavily if they don’t know. I wish if they cold realise that time for you comes and goes too.

  5. These arrests will take us no where as a Nation. Please work on stabilising the economy which you have messed up.

  6. Ya ya ya. Crying cadets. Akulilira wallet yawo. Forensic audit mwayiwerenga? What is so special about Dalitso? It is as simple as explaining his side kuti sindinalakwe basi. I do not want to judge but this guy should be presumed innocent until he is proven guilty. “The only presidential hopeful” my foot!! Simukumudziwa. He has ambitions way beyond the position of the president. That is Dalitso for you.

  7. Deliberately kukabisala ku ndale after sensing his impending arrest so that he can call it political witch-hunting. Ndale zake Zama ammature ndithu.

  8. Very soon Malawians will realize that MCP is ruthless and dirtier as ever before. Obvious that this is just a mere political persecution aiming at weakening the opposition. If there is one Presidential hopeful in Malawi its Kabambe and chances are high this guy can be President in 2025 if MCP keeps underperforming. Koma vuto la aMalawi ndikuyiwala.

    1. I have read your comment more than 2 times and it brings me to the conclusion that you are absolutely right. For your information, they are like Trump government, u will see. Presidents must taste the Police cells, and what MCP is doing is preparing this guy to take over from them, trust me.

    2. There is no ruthlessness here. Why did these people abuse tax payers money? Kapambe awarded himself with a K27 million salary a month. He must vomit all this. There is no nkhanza. These are thieves.

  9. Pure witch hunt. This will take us nowhere as a nation. We will end up settling compensation claims for for unlawful arrests. Cry my beloved country Malawi.

    1. Too many “Red flags” to be a mere coincidence. 1. a suspicious check clearance to FDH on the eve of election results, 2. Delayed payments for ballot papers PRINTING after an election are conducted. 3. Kabambe goes into hiding (why?)…looks like an admission of guilt. An innocent person doesn’t run away from the police. NO WITCH HUNTING

  10. This government is clueless it’s showing it’s nakedness by arresting the reputable Former Reserve Bank Governor on flimsy and very stupid charges.

    1. unless you dont love your country thats why you dont have time to think about the reasons why these people are arrested. it is clear that they released 4.3 billion and yet it was reported during the campaign kuti ndalama azipanga divert ku chipani cha dpp kuti yiwine. basi wina kumati its just witch hunting. love your country dont love thieves
