Funding woes hit Malawi parliament, MPs fail to get allowances
Malawi Parliament has failed to pay allowances to legislators for the last week of parliamentary seating.
Some legislators said Parliament owes them K250,000 for the week long subsistence allowance.
The government sanctioned parliament to extend its seating for another week in order to tackle government business, including the tabling and passing of some bills.
Parliament’s publicist Leonard Mengezi said the legislators would get their K50, 000 per day allowances next week.
“Usually we face some accounting hitches soon after we get into another financial year. The government has funded parliament but our accounts personnel are not able to access the funding because of the computerised IFMIS system. We will have the money next week,” he said.
He said parliament has communicated to the MPs to be calm as they will get the money any day next week.
The parliamentarians sat for nine weeks whereby, among other issues, they passed the K1.1 trillion national budget.
