Germany hopes renewed reforms under Mutharika

President of the Federal Republic of Germany Government Joachim Gauck has become the latest head of state to convey his congratulations to Malawi’s newly elected President Peter Mutharika.

Gauck said in a statement issued Thursday he wished Mutharika the very best in the functioning of his duty.

“Mr President, allow me to sincerely congratulate you on your election as President of Malawi and to wish you all the very best in the performance of your new responsibilities,” says the president in the statement.

The Germany leader said during the May 20 Tripartite Election, Malawians made impressive use of their right of democratic participation and that the international community has high hopes that Mutharika’s presidency will bring renewed reforms and good governance.

“I look forward to working with you to continue and strengthen the traditionally good and amicable ties our countries enjoy. For the demanding tasks ahead I wish you a sure hand and every success,” reads the statement.

President Mutharika was sworn-in last week Friday after the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) declared him an eventual winner after a 11-day impasse following anomalies that hit the polls.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Presidential candidate Dr Lazarous Chakwera came second while the governing Peoples Party (PP) came third after amassing just 20.2 percent of the total votes.
