Step Kids Awareness (STEKA) an organization which looks into the welfare of vulnerable children on the streets has called for assistance from well-wishers in the construction of a vocational training centre currently underway at Lirangwe in Blantyre.
STEKA Executive Director (ED), Godknows Maseko Wednesday sounded the Save Our Souls (SOS) on social media (Facebook) where he pleaded with the public to help STEKA buy some building materials such as cement blocks in order to build class rooms and two offices.
He said the project which is underway is going to contribute in lowering the youth unemployment rate in the country since STEKA is going to equip many youths with different skills which would make them become entrepreneurs able to fend for themselves and employ other Malawians.
He said among other skills, the center will train youths in carpentry, fashion designing, and Information Technology.
Maseko applauded President Peter Mutharika for fostering the spirit of entrepreneurship in the country by constructing Community Technical Colleges across the country.
“Malawi is a poor nation because a lot of people are just educated but have no proper skills. The introduction of Community Colleges would shape this country’s economy to greater heights,” the Executive Director pointed out.
In addition to the vocational training centre, STEKA is planning to build a sports complex where different sporting activities such as football, baseball, netball and basketball are going to be taking place as one way of promoting youth development.
Established in August, 2007, STEKA has rescued numerous vulnerable children from the streets and supported others with their education up to tertiary level at different constituent colleges under the University of Malawi including Queen Margaret University in Scotland among other institutions of higher learning.
