Gov’t gives back Kamuzu Institute to Malawi Sports Council

Ministry of Youth Development and Sports has  surrendered Kamuzu Institute of Sports back to Malawi National Council of Sports, three years after government took away the facility from the sports regulatory authority.

In February 2012, the DPP led government took away Kamuzu Institute from Council, accusing the government parastatal of failing to maintain the facility.

The Bingu wa Mutharika administration laid out plans to give the facility modern looks and improve the sporting facilities at the institute but when government changed hands following the death of President Bingu wa Mutharika in April 2012, government completely neglected the facility.

Having failed to run the sports facility, government through the Sports Ministry decided to give back the institute to Council, which had moved its staff into rented premises after the government take
over.

The handover ceremony took place at the Institute last Friday without any fanfare or media presence but Nyasa Times has been following the developments with keen interest.

Council and Ministry officials have confirmed the Institute is now in Sports Council’s hands but no reasons have been been given for the sudden U-turn on the part of government.

Sports observers feel Council is better placed to run the facility looking at the way the George Jana led administration has transformed the Council Secretariat at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre into a modern facility.
