President Peter Mutharika said this at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Thursday after meeting members of Public Affairs Committee (PAC).

“There will be commissioners for the Malawi Electoral Commission before May 17, there will be no gap,” Mutharika said after PAC chairman Felix Chingota raised the issue with him.

All commissioners term of office expires on May 18 whilst chairman Maxon Mbendera’s term expires in October.

Chingota also said there was need for Malawi to have electoral reforms, saying the presidential race should be on 50 plus One system instead of the present first past the post.
