Govt’s K15.7 billion Mutukula Pakhomo wa M’mzinda takes off: 105 000 households to receive K150 000
Government says it has commenced registration for ultra-poor and vulnerable households in the cities of Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu, and Zomba for the Urban Emergency Cash Transfer Programme (Mtukula Pakhomo wa M’mizinda) in response to price shocks.
The programme, called Mtukula Pakhomo wa M’mizinda, aims to provide a onetime payment of MK150, 000.00 per household to 105,000 eligible households to cover the lean months of January to March 2024.
In a statement signed by secretary to the treasury Betchani Tchereni, this cash transfer is designed to help cushion the urban poor against price shocks, ease access to food, and enhance their resilience against disasters.
“The Government is currently identifying all eligible beneficiaries using very objective and transparent approaches aligned with the Malawi Unified Beneficiary Registry (UBR) under the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs,” he said.
The Malawi Social Protection Multi-Donor Trust Fund, with support from the World Bank, USAID, Iceland, Ireland, UK-FCDO, the European Union, and Norway, is funding the Emergency Urban Cash Transfer Programme (Mtukula Pakhomo wa M’mizinda) under the Social Support for Resilient Livelihoods Project (SSRLP).
