Headman surrenders to Police after sex attack on girl

A 25 year old Village Headman in Mzimba District on Friday gave himself up to Police after almost three weeks at large when news broke out that he had repeatedly defiled a 14 year old girl, Nyasa Times has gathered.

Paradoxically, the girl a standard 8 pupil, is supposed to be his daughter according to the Tumbuka and Ngoni culture.

James Chavula, 25 years of James Chavula village, Traditional Authority Mtwalo in the district, has been on the run since the news broke out until on June 20 when he surrendered himself to Enukweni Police.

Police have since charged him with indecent assault contrary to section 137 of the Penal Code which attracts a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment with hard labor if one is convicted.

Recently, Malawi’s President Mrs. Joyce Banda said her government will act tough on people who sexually assault children or rape old women.

Mzuzu Police Station spokesperson Edward Longwe said between April and May this year at Kawanda, Chavula’s wife had a miscarriage hence requested her elder sister’s daughter to assist her with household chores.

“But on May 26th Chavula returning from a drinking spree, went straight to the girl’s bedroom where he defiled her and threatened her not to reveal. And on May 29th during the day he grabbed the girl in an attempt to defile her again. But he failed and the girl escaped,” Longwe said.

The girl then reported the incident to her parents who later reported the issue to police.

The suspect has been on the run since the news broke out until June 20th when he voluntarily surrendered himself to Enukweni Police.

But a medical examination conducted at Rumphi District Hospital proved negative to defilement because the matter was delayed

He will appear in court soon, according to Longwe.
