Hip-hop artist Slessor releases 2 singles off Renaissance mixtape

Blantyre-based hip-hop artist Slessor, signed to HB Records, has blessed his fans with two singles as he ramps up towards the release of his mixtape titled ‘Renaissance’ next week Monday (February 03).

The first single is ‘Ndasayina’ and he features up-and-coming singer known as Saint while the second single is titled ‘Shobizi’. The two songs are expected to hit the airwaves this Wednesday morning (January 29) and will be available on malawimusic.com, where the mixtape will also be uploaded for free download.

‘Ndasayina’ was produced by Blage and ‘Shobizi’ was produced by Yesaya, two of the country’s rising producers. Yesaya has produced songs like ‘Umamva Bwanji’ by Maskal, the MAM Music Awards Song of the Year 2012-2013 – ‘Desperate’ by Faith Mussa, and the latest Airtel Malawi theme song ‘Mwezi Wawala’.

‘Renaissance’ main producer is Kenya-based Malawian beat-maker/rapper, Tanaposi aka Tana-P. Other guest producers include Stratus, Kiyani, DJ Bwantasa and DJ MEG.

The mixtape, which Slessor says is a project which he redefines himself musically, among others, features two of the country’s great rappers namely Lomwe (former Malawi rep at the BBA) and Cyclone of the disbanded hip-hop group The Basement, who is also a brother to hip-hop icon BarryOne.

“I’ve made this mixtape for the people out there, make sure you have it in your phones and laptops come Monday. Got amazing features on it. And to those who thought I was never coming back, consider this my rebirth – Renaissance,” Slessor told Nyasa Times .

Slessor has been quiet for almost two years and at the time he was going into hibernation, he had a very good buzz with his song ‘Phwando La Lero’ and was proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the hip-hop game.

“I decided to go silent to explore my capabilities more and now is the opportune time to show Malawi what I have to offer once again,” he further said. “I think am more mature musically now than most people. You’ll agree with me when you listen to my new material.”

Originally from the northern city of Mzuzu, the artist, born Slessor Munthali on July 28, 1991, is a rapper/singer/songwriter who has been active in the music industry since the year 2009. The song that earned him recognition was ‘Heart Breaker’, whose video still enjoys airplay on MBCtv.

His style of delivery, punch lines and fluency in both English and Chichewa, has made him earn a spot as one of Malawi’s promising hip-hop stars.
