HRDC goes ahead to sue MBC over ‘terrorist’ remark as deadline for apology expires
Lawyers for rights activists, the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) say they are going ahead to demand K200 million from the state controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation after the public broadcaster failed to withdraw and apologise over the terrorist group remark during the prime time news cast.
The decision to go ahead to drag MBC to court also comes at a time when the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) withdrew its decision to reprimand the public broadcaster over the unethical behaviour.
Lawyer for HRDC Wesley Mwafulirwa said his clients have given him the green light go ahead with the defamatory case.
“With or without Macra withdrawing its letter to MBC, our clients stand by their action and I will proceed with the legal action,” said Mwafulirwa.
The tax payer funded broadcaster has come under intense fire for disregarding professional ethics over the ruling party propaganda.
