Malawi Police has arrested a man suspected to have brutally murdered his sister Janet Chitedze and had her private parts removed at Shadreck Village, in the areas of Traditional Authority Mkanda in Mchinji.

According to the Mchinji Police Public Relations Officer sergeant Moses Kajawa Nyirenda, the suspect Selemani Medson aged 21, was arrested between Namitete and Mchinji boma on Friday the 1st May 2015.

Nyirenda added that “the time we were arresting the suspect, he told us that he was searching for farming works in the area of Namitete.”

The police spokesman said after questioning the suspect, he confessed to have brutally murdered his sister because he was persuaded by a witch doctor that he will get rich.

Police said they are investigating in order for them to find out the whereabouts of the private parts belonging to late Janet Chitedze.

Nyirenda added that, “the suspect sounded remorseful and is cooperating with the Police.”

The medical report of the deceased shows that the deceased has no eyes, right breast and her private part.

Medson  will answer charges of murder which is contrary to section 209 of the penal code.

One of the human rights organization in Mchinji, Women Hope for Change, has commended the police for managing to arrest the murder suspect.

According to Executive Director for Women Hope for Change Mrs. Helen Makukula said Chitedze needs justice.

“For the past two month Mchinji has been locked with bad news like beating and defiling girls and now is brutal murder to our young girls,” Makukula noted.

Meanwhile, Malawi Minister of Gender, Children and Social welfare Patricia Kaliati has deplored acts of brutally murdering people to extract genitals for rituals.

Kaliati made the remarks on Tuesday when she visited the family of Janet Chitedze.

“Government is concerned with criminal activities occurring in the district, and we are working with the police to ensure that there is security in the district,” she said.

Kaliati who also visited a victim of domestic violence Linda Phulani, who was severely beaten by her husband in the same district on Friday last week, said it is appalling that Mchinji is in the news for the wrong reasons.

“Where is humanity? How can a man murder his own cousin and remove her private parts just because he wants to get rich? If you want to get rich work hard and venture into farming,” said a visibly concerned Kaliati.

She also condemned men who abuse their wives, saying men should take care of their families,

Senior Chief Mkanda also condemned the brutal murder.

  31. Just arresting the boy and prosecuting him without prosecuting the sing’anga will not solve the problem. As already said the sing’anga should also be put in jail.

    Malawi needs to start a campaign or an educational programme that will deal with the private parts issue vs getting rich. The people should be enlightened that the private part trade is a farce – there is no truth in it. Thindwa’s programme should be supported. The whole programme on addressing this will certainly add value to the economic development efforts as people will start to get the fact that there is no short cut to getting rich – its working hard, hard hard in whatever you do.

    It will be also helpful if Malawian Children start to connect between working hard and kuchita bwino – in some cases they are puzzled with the fact that their seniors are lazy and yet they get rich.
