‘If Malawi Needs an Economist, Pick Kabambe’ — UTM’s Msusa Rallies Mitundu
UTM events director Khwesi Msusa has set political tongues wagging after urging the people of Mitundu in Lilongwe to rally behind Dalitso Kabambe as the party’s torchbearer in the coming elections.

Speaking with unapologetic bluntness, Msusa declared:
“If the country needs a preacher, vote for Chakwera. If it needs a lawyer, vote for Mutharika. But if your problems are economic and about real development, your man is Kabambe — a trained economist who knows exactly how to fix this nation.”
In a jab at Kabambe’s rivals, Msusa added that at 51 years old, Kabambe is still young enough to be held accountable for wrongdoing in government. “If he steals, he can be jailed — unlike others who are so old that pity will spare them prison,” he said, drawing murmurs and laughter from the crowd.
Who is Dalitso Kabambe?
Kabambe, 51, is a Malawian economist and former Reserve Bank Governor. With a PhD in Development Economics from Imperial College London and decades in public service, he is known for his technocratic approach to fiscal policy. During his tenure at the central bank (2017–2020), he championed financial sector reforms and pushed for monetary stability, though his legacy remains a subject of political debate.
UTM’s open endorsement of Kabambe marks a clear push to position him as the party’s answer to Malawi’s economic woes — and a direct challenge to both Chakwera’s MCP and Mutharika’s DPP in the battle for State House.
