Indian businessman arrested at Malawi airport for attempting to externalise K504 mil
A 38 year-old Malawian businessman of Indian Origin has been arrested for attempting to externalize foreign currency amounting to about K504 million.

Police officers at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA ) arrested Iqbar Sodagar Moinuddian Mohmad after being found in possession of US$622,820, 2,015 British Pounds and 15,860 Euros.
Sergeant Suplain Chitonde disclosed that Mohmad was arrested at the departures Lounge before boarding an Aircraft to Dubai through Ethiopian Airways.
“He had refused his bag to go through the X-ray machine or to be physically searched by the Police Officers manning the checkpoint,” said Chitonde.
“As a result, the Police Officers on duty became suspicious and conducted a thorough search whereby the said forex was found packed in his bag.”
The 15 bricks of Gold weighing 14 Kilograms which were concealed in the bag was found wrapped in specially designed materials in order to beat the normal X-ray machine system.
Currently, the suspect is in Police custody at KIA and has admitted to have accumulated the forex from black market, without supporting documents.
In relation to the 15 breaks of Gold, he claims to have bought it from an undisclosed Nigerian within Lilongwe.
Mohmad is expected to appear before court soon to answer three counts of illegal possession of foreign currency , attempting to externalise forex and money laundering.
Mohmad was born in 1979 at a place called Maharashtra in Mumbai,India. He holds an Indian Passport number Z3216835 but has stayed in Lilongwe Area 2, for nearly 20 years.

Idi Amin chased Indians from Ugandan because of this stupid malpractices.Indians and Chinese think Malawians
we are sleepy.Uganda and Kenya are good at dealing with these people.Ulemo too
much ife a Malawi.
All Indians are not the same
Malawi nde akuyipezerera bwanji .. ?
Government should send the message of non-tolerance to forex smugglers through this plunderer. Anthu achonchi they don’t deserve any bail. The courts should send give a sterner sentence to this guy to deter others from this uncouth behavior. We have said it many a times kuti government treats these |ndians with kids gloves. Government tenders mukuwapasa amwenye; all buildings in cities our 100% occupancy ndi amwenye government cannot even demand a quota of black businesses in these buildingsi; MRA suzapeza mwenye atamangidwa koma ife anthu akuda amangotipezelela basi; Malawi is not poor if one individual can horde over half a million US Dollars multiply that by 100 amwenye ndi ndalama zingati zomwe zili mu black market. Komanso our apex bank they are just spectators sama panga malamulo okomela dziko not even one day. For the country to move forward we will have to be tough and start policing the economy in good measure otherwise tidzasauka mpakana Ambuye adzabwele.
If govtment uses non corrupt intelligence to investigate then I assume there is a lot going out undeclared from smaller amounts like k20mil to k1bn , he isn’t the smallest amount or highest to exit and he isn’t the only one. The whole black market thing must be cracked, the guys laundering forex in cities work for businesses, sweep each one of them then let them reveal who the businesses or beaureas are then another k1bn with be confisticated and all the confisticated money should be reinvested in equip, manpower, training, transparency of the enforcement of fiscal security system.
He is lucky to have been caught in Malawi and Malawi can atleast recover the money, in he could have had to be searched in again at Addis Ababa and in India and some corrupt police could either snatch his bag or kidnap him after seeing the money on the xray, just how did he think he could beat two airports, dealer usually arrange for connections n in both airport I.e airlines staff could walk with the bag into the plane at lilongwe then also walk with it into the plane when connecting in Ethiopian or Dubai, malamulo amugheto, use intelligence and abit of most money to stay safe, he didn’t want to use that. Police couldn’t even save him at the airport coz the most the most ney was too much, I would say one need to give k50mil to police at the airport and k50mil to airlines office then another k100mil n Ethiopia coz he could carry 5 million dollars worth of.gold in that bag
Just imagine this is small compared to what government officials take out every month to foreign banks. Malawians u Wonder why Malawi is poor. This is just small. Indian and Chines take money out. They dont bank in Malawian banks. How do we expect a country to develope? Every penny goes out. Leaders and gurus have so much money in foreign banks while our banks have nothing. Instead we are charged 3 Times for mortgages and saving. They must be a proper Law in Malawi. Of-Course a person can take money out but how much? Even in Europe there is a limit how one can take in foreign currency. Abale we are robbed we poor people. This is because the government is rotten itself. It could never happened during Kamuzu Banda. Malawi is lawless nation with full Of thieves.
Malawi could have lost a potential in the economy, this money and gold could have created and investment with would energise the lwantedlocal eonomy and generate about k50mil of tax yearly and jobs for 50 people or an investment of k500mil could reduce some problem in the sectors that are indeaquate whilst he is making profit as well as solving a national problem. He can build 2500 houses at k20 each equivalent to five all townships and the gold could lease the land and the a part of rental income could pay the owner of the land I.e govt
That’s simply how Malawi is poor, Treat the gold and money as proceeds of crime, hope the court find it that that, any monies or precious minerals, or simply anything of that financial value including cash itself needs to have a legitimate official source and an audit trail. Then he should prove that he paid tax as well, else he must loose the cash then investigate him house and others involved. All poor country are poor because of corruption, lack of functional efficient institutions, the culture or religion of putting the effort to improve life on earth, externalisation of money. This is a vicious circle, a company doesn’t pay taxes, it doesn’t employ qualified people but rather incapable people with connections resulting into producing low standard goods/service, the police or courts are inefficient or corrupt to prosecute as they also were employeed nepotistically, their children are going to low standard education and low standards hospital because the govtment doesn’t collect enough taxes and it is corrupt and inefficient as civil servant aren’t employees in merit, the little taxes collected are also spent on tenders to enrich govt and politicians who externalise their monies thereby further impoverishing the country, this whole system fails the state but the weakness advantages those who are in power, so the weakness is maintained by govt, THE GOVT , FUNNY, ENOUGH ENCOURAGES THE PEOPLE TO BE DEEPLY RELIGIOUS, KNOWING THAT THEY WOULD ACCEPT THE PORVETY AS GODLY WHILSY WAITING FOR A LUXURIOUS LIFE AFTER DEATH, THIS BELIEF FAVOURS THOSE MILKING THE SYSTEM AS IT SILENCES MASSES, THESE FACTORS ARE VERY COMMON AT THE HIGHEST RATES IN ALL POOR COUNTRIES BUT NOT COMMON ALSMOST NON EXISTENT IN RIGHT COUNTRIES.
This is the reason why Kamuzu Banda chased these Asians. U called him bad nog u can see.
BRAVO INCORRUPTIBLE POLICE OFFICER WHO WAS MANNING THE GATE, IG PROMOTE HIM. MALAWI IS VERY RICH BUT LACK SUCH CALIBER OF OFFICERS. WITH ALL THIS MONEY EVEN A U$D 1,000.00 WAS ENOUCH TO BRIBE HIM, BUT HE WAS PATROTIC.
Let me concur with the asking if at all our prisons have ever hosted clients of Asian origin. Is it that all those suspects who appear before courts (Asians) win their cases or our country does not have prisons good enough for them?
Someone has been arrested should not be treated as guilty. Universal law says that: Innocent till proven guilty. Such attitude in law enforcement agencies is very dangerous. They have their own functions and the courts have theirs. I’m not saying this because of a foreighner. That is the law of respect. Our people suffer a lot when the police act as judge, jury and execusioner. They treat them as guilty before appearing before the courts of Law. Some of my fellow bloggers are also expressing the same opinion. It would be worth it to put yourself in such a persons shoes and get his point of view.
ZIKU WANU DARAMA
NI WANTU
Needs stiff punishment. Anthu amenewa amatitola kwambiri bola wamkulu wina asalowerelepo. Enanso obowa ndi ma lawyers athu they defend these guys.
Happy new year in prison……….you were not so smart
What? Malawi is indeed gone to the dogs. Nsomba ikawola ku mutu mpaka kumuchira ndithu. Next think we will hear is that he is connected to the most corrupt government big fish or minister. They are already failing to prosecute 4 million case. This case muuuuuu I don’t think if it will see the light at the end
That is what Dausi have been letting these Indians to externalize the forex. Thank God Dausi is no longer at NIB
“Malawian of Indian origin” yet he has an Indian passport. He can’t be a Malawian.
Those of you advocating for dual citizenship, these are the crooks who will jump at the Malawian passport while hanging on to their countries without any iota of patriotism towards Malawi. Look what he has just done.
This is the reason why Kamuzu Banda chased these Asians. U called him bad nog u can see.j
A malawi tulo too much anthu akutulitsa ndalama in hard cold cash koma ife eni dziko tikutuwa ndi umphawi. I wonder what will happen to him he will probably walk scott free even with all the evidence against him. My poor Malawi timayika anthu athu pa chiswe for the sake of pleasing ungrateful law breaking foreigners. It time we put Malawian Citizens, their safety, well being and interests first.
what made this Indian to hav that confidence to pass the boarder with such amount of cash. It means others pass
Hej is just a carrier. Its someone in the government Who has sent him tog taket for him. U know people in DDP take money through amwenye (Asians) They work with them in business that why Indians is going well and protected. As soon as a leader takes over Indians go to pay bribe. Dont think all the money is his. If Nigerian involved Its time to chase them too. Trump is right. Even in Europe They are chasing them. All these people are taking Malawians as fools. I wish Dr Kamuzu was alive.
So we have gold..that is more than that money
Breaks of gold hahaha
He’s connected to certain big men tomorrow he will be out believe you me rendering the life of a village Malawian into absolute poverty
Bravo our KIA Police!!!
Tighten security in all Air Ports and border points. We do not want our forex to be used to fund clandestine activities and terrorism.
Govt procure hightech equipment to thoroughly screen anything. I observed that our check-in procedure in our Air Ports is so simple and likely to be beaten by such evil pple unlike most international airports abroad. In 2017, introduce very tight and stringent procedures to make our airports very secure again.
How many Asians do our prisons hold? One hears a lot criminal offences by Asians, Nigerians and Pakistan Taliban but no one serves a sentence. The justice system seems not to work for them.
Can the justice system set an example on this one that Asians too can be punished if they break the law. When sentencing Malawians courts say they are deterring would be next offenders. The same should be said for foreigners. Malawi is the only country where foreigners exercise more freedom than locals.
