Indian community’s proud Lilongwe celebration as High Commissioner hails growing bond with Malawi

Members of Malawi’s Indian community came together in a proud show of unity as they marked India’s 80th Independence Day at a special ceremony held at the Indian High Commission in Lilongwe.

The milestone celebration saw dignitaries and community members gather to honour the day India threw off the shackles of colonial rule — with organisers insisting the occasion carries just as much significance for the diaspora thousands of miles from home.

Addressing the gathering, Indian High Commissioner to Malawi Amararam Gujar declared it was vital for the community to mark the historic day, insisting the celebrations help foster unity among Indians living in Malawi.

The High Commissioner used his speech to hail the deepening ties between the two nations, revealing that India continues to pour investment and business into the country.

In a message read out to the community, Indian President Droupadi Murmu urged citizens to celebrate the day “with pride” — declaring that true freedom means ensuring all citizens can seize opportunities to fulfil their dreams.

Gujar went further, stressing the crucial role ordinary citizens play in driving national development, before delivering an upbeat assessment of the relationship between the two countries over the past year.

He revealed that India-Malawi relations have flourished over the past 12 months, pointing to a string of activities and high-level engagements between the two nations.

The High Commissioner singled out trade, investment, health and political cooperation as key pillars of the booming partnership.

Wrapping up his address, Gujar pledged India’s unwavering commitment to strengthening ties with Malawi even further — hailing the relationship as a powerful symbol of the “strong friendship and longstanding relations” binding the two countries together.
