Inkosi Mbelwa faces court action of chieftancy wrangles

Wrangles over the legitimate heir to the Mzikubola chieftancy in Mzimba have errupted again with one of the claimant Zoba Jere threatening to drag Inkosi ya Makhosi Mbelwa IV to court over the protracted chieftancy.

Speaking to Nyasa Times, Zoba Jere claimed he is the rightful heir to the Mzikubola chieftaincy.

He accused the Ngoni paramount chief of being corrupt and playing double standards on the rightful heir to the thrown.

According to Jere, during a chiefs council meeting that was convened at Esigozgeni on 19 April, 2008 it was agreed that he should be installed as T/A Mzikubola.

Zoba Jere therefore said that he was surprised that instead the paramount Chief started glooming Masawani Jere as T/A Mzikubola.

Inkosi Mbelwa: Wrangles

”During the meeting it was also agreed that Chikomeni Thole who is currently acting as T/A Mzikubola should not be getting the chief’s honorarium. But up to date Chikomeni Thole is being paid,” said Zoba Jere.

He said this has prompted him to seek legal redress and ensure that he is installed as T/A Mzikubola as tradition demands.

Zoba Jere said beside that, he has the backing of the local chiefs, who contrary to M’mbelwa, wants him to be the next T/A Mzikubola.

Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa could not be reached on his mobile phone to seek his side of the story.

However, secretary for the Chief’s council Senior Chief Mpherembe described Zoba Jere’s claims as baseless and unfounded.

Senior Chief Mpherembe said he is not aware of the said April 19 2008 meeting where it was agreed that Zoba Jere is the legitimate heir and therefore should be installed as T/A Mzikubola.

”I dont know anything about the said meeting and Zoba Jere’s claims are baseless and unfounded,” said Senior Chief Mpherembe.

But Chikomeni Thole confirmed that the said meeting took place.

He however denied reports that the meeting agreed that Zoba Jere is the legitimate heir to the Mzikubola thrown.

Among others those who attended the meeting included former Mzimba district commissioner Richard Hara, Paramount Chief M’Mbelwa, all T/As, local chiefs and members of Mzimba Heritage association.

The protracted chieftancy wrangles dates back to 2000 when the then T/A Mzikubola Chifwede Jere died.
