IntoSports sponsors Nomads, Bullets K5m Giants Cup
Age-old football rivals Bullets FC and Mighty Wanderers are on course for another showdown barely a week after facing each other in the Zambezi Challenge Cup as a local sports merchandise shop–IntoSports— has organised K5 million (about $12 500) Giants Cup that will see the two teams meeting twice in a mini-pre-season tournament.
The two-legged tournament is set to kick off this Sunday when Bullets host Nomads at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre while the return leg is set for the capital next week.
The country’s top teams have formed a joint working committee to run the tournament.
A member of the committee David Kanyenda of Wanderers said the committee had agreed that the winners would pocket K3 million (about $7 500) while losers will get K2 million (about $5 000).
“The clash of the giants has come at the right time and it will help both teams fundraise and pay our players outstanding arrears. We will also raise funds to kick start our preparations,” Kanyenda said.
Bullets trustee Gaston Mwenelupembe said they were in the process formalising the tournament with Football Association of Malawi as required.
Mwenelupembe also said the tournament would be an annual event aimed at bringing sanity to the game by eradicating hooliganism which has been dented the image of football in the country of late.
IntoSports managing director Shabir Ismail said he is sponsoring the Ginats Cup as one way of appreciating the support his business gets from Malawians.
Charges for Sunday’s game are K3 000 VIP, K2 000 Covered Stands, K1 000 MBC Stand and K500 Open Stands.
