Islamic charity assist flood victims in Malawi

A local Malawian relief operation, the Asian Muslim Relief Aid (AMRA) has intensified its efforts in alleviating the suffering of thousands of Malawians affected by devastating floods that have hit Malawi over the past three weeks.

Heavy rainfall in Malawi swept many homes away and damaged thousands of hectares of agricultural crops.

Latest government statistics show that over 640, 000 people have been displaced killing 176 others in the process.

However, AMRA has moved in as one of the organizations that are providing relief aid to the affected households in various parts of the country.

The organization tells Nyasa Times that  it has so far provided relief aid to the victims in Mangochi, Chikwawa and Nsanje districts and Blantyre urban.

It says each household is receiving a pack worth MK20, 000 and MK2, 000 in cash.

“We have come up with a relief pack that consists of 10kg maize flour, 1 roll of black sheeting, 2kg maize seed, 25 Water Guard water purification sachets, 1 blanket, Crockery and utensil set consisting of 7 plates, 7 mugs, 7 spoons, 7 ndiwo (relish) plates,  Book,  2 packets of soya pieces,  1 mosquito net,  1 plastic Bucket and 1 plastic Basin,” reads the statement.

The organisation further says it has already distributed 1,150 packs in Mangochi district “with our own team of volunteers.”

According to the AMRA, one hundred tons of maize flour and 10 tons of soya pieces are being distributed in Chikwawa and Nsanje districts in conjunction with District Council’s offices  and the Department of Disaster Management Affairs ,  each receiving 50 tons of maize flour and 5 tons of soya pieces.

AMRA further says another relief effort is under way in Blantyre urban areas which aim to distribute 500 packs.

“We are planning to distribute a further 6,500 of these packs in Phalombe district in the affected areas this coming weekend if we are able to manage to finish packing in time. We are being affected by erratic power and hence our suppliers aren’t able to provide the requirement in time.”

The organization is currently appealing for more funding from well-wishers to assist in the relief effort.  Interested well-wishers are advised to send their donation through Islamic Zakaat Fund in Limbe.

At last, some positive news concerning Islam . We are sick and tired of reading about the activities of ISIS , Boko Haram , El Shabaab , and many other Islamic organisations .

I personally commend AMLA for its efforts but think putting pictures that do not fully reflect how it happened is not fair to the other organisation that took the chopper before them and distributed food and non food items to the victims. If you are going to use our photo of our staff carrying the old lady, the least you could have done is give us credit. that is not Lambat please get your facts straight nyasatimes.
