Islamic charity respond to Malawi President’s appeal for food aid
The local Islamic charity, the Gift of the Givers Foundation, has donated 10,000 bags of maize flour to Malawi President Joyce Banda in response to an appeal she made recently to the founder of the organization Dr Intiaz Suleiman.
“I want to thank Dr Suleiman most profoundly for his response to my appeal. I met him in South Africa on my way back from the United States.
“He travelled from Durban to Johannesburg to meet me and the result is this large donation that will feed thousands [of people] facing food shortage situation in Salima one of the many districts in Malawi that has been hit hard by food shortage,” said president Banda.
She was speaking at Mchepa Primary School , T.A. Mwanza in Salima District when she was receiving the donation from chairperson of the Gift of the Givers Foundation in Malawi Gaffar Jakhura.
President Banda expressed gratitude towards the Islamic organization for what she said “timely donation.”
Reports show that about two million Malawians are face hunger situation because of poor harvest and rains this year.
The president called on well wishers, individuals firms and other organizations to come to the rescue of those facing hunger in different parts of the country.
Jakhura said his foundation will continue helping the needy and the poor in Malawi because it is the belief of the founder of the organization that indeed “blessed is the hand that giveth…,” as the scriptures say. During the function other well wishers made pledges of maize.
President Joyce Banda said her government will ensure that every district affected receive relief assistance.
