It’s Bingu Stadium not Joyce Banda idea – Malawi govt
Minister of Youth and Sports Development Grace Chiumia has said government would not name the state-of-the-art stadium currently under construction in Lilongwe has after immediate past president Joyce Banda but will be called Bingu National Stadium in honour of former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika who initiated the project.
In his official response to the State of the Nation Address in Parliament in Lilongwe, Mussa claimed that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration was “claiming ownership” of PP projects such as the national stadium in Lilongwe “for lack of nothing to show” in the one year in office.
“Mr Speaker, Sir, everybody knows that the Joyce Banda International Stadium commenced and is now in progress. It is to be completed by the DPP-led government. If we change the name, it is up to you. But to this side of the House, it is known as the Joyce Banda National Stadium. Mr Speaker, Sir, it is wrong for this new DPP-led government, for lack of anything tangible to show, to claim credit on these projects,” Mussa said in parliament.
But Minister of Sport rising on a point of order said the name for the 40 000-seater facility was given in honour of the initiator the late Bingu.
“When we name an infrastructure, we don’t name it because one side of the House admires that infrastructure to be named. But an infrastructure is named after a person to appreciate what that person did.
“For instance, the Honourable Member was saying that they would like the stadium to be named after Joyce Banda. In correction, we don’t name an infrastructure because one side of the House like that name to be, Mr Speaker, Sir,” said Chiumia attracting laughter from members.
Speaker Richard Msowoya described Chiumia’s statement as “a point of education.”
Blantyre City South MP Allan Ngumuya also said he was standing on point of order, saying Mussa was
Misleading the country that the project of the Chinese-funded Stadium is an achievement by Joyce Banda “when she just moved the stadium from the South to Centre?”
Ngumuya said the stadium project was “originally founded “by late Bingu wa Mutharika.
He said Joyce Banda “just moved the stadium to the central.”
Mussa interjected Ngumuya saying “Chita Manyazi” [Shame on you].
Speaker said MPs were “points of debate.”

The initiator of the project for a stadium, even the devil knows the truth that it was not JB, what she did was just to change the place to be constructed from BT to LL, this everybody knows the truth and the initiator is the name to be used. JB analibe maganizo omanga stadium and even the AFFEC contructors( Chinese) know who asked for the project.
