Well known for his tagline “wanthu wanthu, people people”, Jay Jay Cee got nominated for Best New Comer and Best Dancehall Artist at the 2016 UMP Awards which he won the former.

Speaking in an interview with Joy Nathu on MBC radio 2’s Made on Monday, the youthful dancehall artist said winning the award was a milestone in his career.

“Firstly, I felt excited when I got nominated. To be honest, I knew I was going to win judging from how the ghetto responded. The ghetto youths feel me and those are the ones who voted.

“After winning, I felt inspired and the award fired me up. It made me believe that only sky is the limit and I can achieve anything,” said the confident Jay Jay Cee.

In the Best New Comer category, he was up against Charisma, Kelvin sings, Purple C and Ril B.

“Everyone in the category could have won because they are all talented and they all had hit songs last year. Kelvin Sings had also won another competition but I was confident of winning because the ghetto had my back,” he added.

Pressed to comment on those who said he didn’t deserve the award, he responded: “There were two groups. I understood those who knew me from way back. Those who said I was a veteran. But, for those who simply said I didn’t deserve it for no reason, they are simply haters.”

Jay Jay Cee shot to fame with smash hits “Makhumutcha” a duet with Nesnes and “Jangiliya”.

Jay Jay Cee who is also a Mabiringanya Empire member, has “Dzina Langa” album to his credit.

“There are no digital distributions at the moment. We are only selling CDs at Raj studio near Wenela bus station in Blantyre,” he said.

He added: “In 2017, we are organizing a tour from Nsanje to Chitipa. In addition, each and every month we plan to be dropping two songs and one video.”

Currently, Jay Jay Cee is studying journalism at polytechnic’s continuing education centre (CEC) in Blantyre.
