JB appoints Kalemba new Malawi Director of Public Prosecution

President Joyce Banda has appointed Chief Legal Advocate Bruno Kalemba, as the new Director for Public Prosecutions.

Kalemba LLB (Hons University of Malawi, 1995) who has assisted a lot of poor Malawians to access legal redress, including those on homicide, when he was at Legal Aid, confirmed the development with Nyasa Times on Tuesday.

“I have received the letter of appointment. It is a presidential appointment, of course subject to the Parliamentary Public Appointments Committee (PAC) approval,” he said, adding he was so delighted to be considered for such an important post.

Many legal experts have hailed the appointment of Kalemba, saying he has necessary skills and capacity to perform his functions efficiently and effectively.

As the country’s top prosecutor, Kalemba will take over from Rose Kanyuka who is the first female lawyer to hold the office since it was established. She replaced Wezzie Kayira who was recently moved to the Labour ministry as Director of Administration.

Others who have held the position include lawyer Fahad Assani and Kamudoni Nyasulu.
