JB dissolves Cabinet as Malawi gears for watershed polls
Malawian President Joyce Banda has dissolved cabinet ahead of Tuesday May 20 Tripartite elections.
A statement from the Office of President and Cabinet said Banda has dissolved cabinet in line with the powers vested in her by the Constitution as the country’s President.
The statement said that following the dissolution, the president will be the sole in charge of all government duties in the OPC.
Banda took over government two years ago following sudden death of Mutharika who ruled the country from 2004 to April 5 2012 when death curtailed his second term of office which was to end before the Tuesday tripartite elections.
Malawians goes to the polls Tuesday to elect a Head of State, 192 members of parliament and 442 ward councillors are expected to be ushered in office for the next five years.
Voting for one Member of Parliament and two ward counsellors are on hold following deaths of a candidate in each of the affected areas.
But per laws governing elections, campaign period ends 48 hours before voting centres open which is Sunday may 19 2014 at six in the morning.
